Start before you start high school by writing introduction letters to your top twenty colleges.  This will be your first contact with potential coaches and it should be professional, accurate and straight to the point.  Don’t forget to mention other sports that you play and any academic accomplishments.  Coaches are interested in well-rounded players.

The next step is to creating a professional marketing package that encompasses everything you have to offer to their program.  Try to personalize it to the college that you are interested in by using their school colors or motto.  Include a sports resume, any letter of recommendations from past coaches and a video reel of your athletic abilities.  Your video should simply focus on all your diverse abilities while demonstrating your sincere desire to succeed without any high tech hype or flashy graphics.

It is important that you make sure that you included specific and current stats as well any of your past acknowledgements or awards.  Recruiters and coaches are busy running their franchise and it helps if you can give them something concrete that they can review when they find the time.

Your dedication to your education is another way to increase your chances of an athletic scholarship.  Recruiters will lean towards athlete`s with solid GPA, ACT, SAT scores or any academic honors. Coaches want athletes that take school seriously, because it usually translates into an athlete who takes his sport just as seriously.

Getting noticed by baseball coaches

If you want to be noticed than you need to win championships, earn recognized athletic awards and have consistently impressive stats.  Coaches are looking for baseball players with record breaking batting average or players who have pitch a no hitter.  It helps to have accomplishments that gain some media attention, even if it just your local paper.

Your attitude and reputation is also crucial to being considered by a college coach.  It is necessary that you portray yourself as a professional.  Make sure to attend any baseball training camps and showcases that usually have recruiters or coaches in attendance.  The more positive exposure you can get, the better your chances of receiving a scholarship.

Improve your odds of earning a college baseball scholarship

The early you start, the better your odds will be of earning a baseball scholarship.  The process should really start as soon as your grade 8 or freshman year.  Research the eligibility requirements and make sure they you get the grades you need to even be considered.

There are a total of 3,486 Division 1 baseball scholarships available.  Considering the 471,723 high school baseball players that could apply, that is less than a 1% chance of receiving a college baseball scholarship.

For the 10,046 players who made the cut last year, there were a total of 3,486 Division 1 scholarships available.  That means each player who was fortunate enough to make the team have almost a 53% chance of earning a baseball scholarship.  NCAA Division 1 coaches can divide the value of 11.7 scholarships that are allotted to them between as many players as they choose which would also increase a player’s odds.

In 2010-2011 there were 255 teams and 9248 players in NCAA Division 2.  The number of players has almost doubled from the 4661 baseball players only twenty years ago in 1990-1991.

There are a total of 2142 Division 2 baseball scholarships available.  When you factor in the 471,723 high school baseball players that you are up against, that is not even a 1% chance of receiving a scholarship.

In 2010-2011 there were 374 NCAA Division 3 baseballs teams with 11,970 athletes.  That is almost a 90% increase from the 6832 players only 20 years prior in 1990-1991
